Some simple things to remember when doing a website:

1. Know your audience - identify who your target audience is and what they want to see.
2. Put your best foot forward - You don't go on a date with your granny undies hanging out, don't go online with anything less than the best! Best photos (clear, sharp & meaningful), best colours (clashing is never a good look) and best words (spell check, spell check, spell check).
3. Keep It Simple - Having twirling, whirling & whisling may amuse you but it hurts the eyes. Look at how big your file sizes are, we maybe entering the age of broadband but there are people still puttering on dialup. Simple equation: Bigger the files, the slower the download.
4. Give People a Clue - A clue about what your site is about, how to get around it and how to contact you. Cryptic navigation and hidden links don't endear you to your visitors, neither does not making it clear what you are about.

CSS Zen Garden - The site that really gave me an idea what CSS really means and how powerful it can be. After this I left my old HTML generators behind and went completely into hand coding.
TopStyle - For the visually inclined, this is a great CSS program. I use the 'Lite' version.
Validate It - Does you page look wierd in another browser? Try validating it, you'll be surprised.
